The only way to ensure 100% data recovery from an accident is to backup before it occurs.
Backing up to an external hard drive is an excellent, extremely easy and low cost way to keep your data safe. But if you experience a local disaster such as a fire or flood, that external drive is just as much at risk of data loss. If you have any data for yourself or your business that would be devastating to lose, online backup is one of the best solutions.
Wuala Cloud Storage
Wuala is a European company that provides cloud-based storage with very competitive rates (even free!). For a full breakdown of how their service works, feel free to contact us at anytime or you can check out their How it works section or the extensive FAQ. We can provide setup, training & limited support for all of Wuala's services listed below.
- Windows, Mac & Linux support
- Secure Online Storage - all data is encrypted before leaving your computer and not even Wuala can see what you are storing unless you specifically make it viewable to the public
- File Sharing - privately with friends or other Wuala users or publicly via the Web. Your online storage is also available to you anywhere you have an internet connection.
- Fully Automated Backup. Schedule what you what backed up continuously, hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly.

- File Synchronization - Keep files updated in real-time between multiple computers. Makes it easy to work on files from multiple locations and ensure all places are kept up to date!
We use Wuala ourselves for offsite backup and would be glad to send you a referral. This entitles you to an extra gigabyte (for a total of 3) of free storage for your first year!
Data Privacy Concerns:
- For all customers, data is sent over an encrypted connection to the backup location (similar to online banking security).
- If you are concerned about the privacy of the data itself after it has been stored remotely, there are several options available:
- Wuala automatically encrypts all data that is sent to it before it ever leaves your computer. Even your password never leaves your system, so not even Wuala cannot see your data.
- You can create a TrueCrypt volume and upload that as your backup. This has the advantage of encrypting your data both locally (to protect your data if your PC is stolen) & remotely. TrueCrypt is supported on Windows, Mac & Linux.
- Please be aware that losing your password (or keyfile with Truecrypt) will result in data loss. For Wuala, this means all your data stored online will be inaccessible. Since Wuala doesn't store your password on their end, they cannot recover it for you. Encryption is sometimes a necessary way to safeguard the privacy of your data, but extra precautions are required to ensure you don't lose access to that data. We are not responsible for lost passwords or key files.
