Microsoft Security Essentials - Limited Free Use - Microsoft has made a great, free Antivirus software package available for home & home-business users. It's very low on resources and has gotten great reviews from many software review companies. If you've got Windows computers at home, this is one of the best free Antivirus software packages available. There is no commercial version of this software and it is not free for commercial use. If you need Antivirus for your business, AVG is a great alternative. AVG Antivirus - Limited Free & Commercial Use - A limited capability version of the popular AVG Antivirus software is available free. Very easy to use. Has the same antivirus protection level of the full commercial edition, but the customization options are very limited. Also, the free version is limited to personal, home use and cannot be used in any commercial means. Foresight owns a commercial license for this software and uses it in combination with other applications mentioned here for cleaning infections. Spybot Search & Destroy - 100% Free - Very popular, easy to use spyware cleaning software suite. Has some tools to provide some limited infection prevention, but it is mostly a cleaning tool. Must be updated and run manually. Clamwin Antivirus - 100% Free - A very powerful antivirus software based on ClamAV, the most widely used antivirus software on email servers. Less user-friendly than MSE or AVG Free but has one of the highest detection ratings of any antivirus software currently available. Also, it does not provide "real-time" monitoring of your computer for viruses like AVG does. You schedule it to scan when you want and it will report its findings to you. You can even set it to email you if/when it finds something. Because of its very small use of system resources, it's an excellent antivirus for gaming or high-performance systems where you need every ounce of computing power for your programs. You can also run it along side other real-time scanners like AVG if you wish for extra protection. Trendmicro HijackThis - 100% Free - WARNING: Be extremely careful using this software! It shows both good and bad settings on your computer, so make sure you know what you are doing or consult an expert before changing anything it finds. I'm providing it here because, if you learn how to use it, it is one of the most effective tools available for discovering what has infected your computer. Norton & McAfee Removal Tools - Want to get rid of Norton or McAfee Antivirus but just can't seem to do it? You're not alone. Always try and run their normal uninstallation procedures first! If that doesn't work, thankfully their manufacturers have provided some tools to help you. Even this isn't a guarentee, though.
